The Mid-Century Modern Playhouse/ Doghouse Design Challenge is a competition (“Contest”) to design a playhouse or doghouse that embodies the spirit of Mid-Century Modern architecture and design. Selected entrants will be eligible to receive public exposure for their entry, have the opportunity to build and publically exhibit their constructed designs, and have their constructed designs auctioned off in a silent auction for charity at the main Historic Ravinia event on October 9, 2016.
The primary sponsors are the Historic Ravinia organizers, Highland Park Historic Preservation Commission, Highland Park Cultural Arts Commission, Chicago Bauhaus & Beyond, and Ravinia Neighbors Association. Other mid-century modern focused organizations and local businesses will be making donations in the form of money, labor, goods and services to make the Historic Ravinia (2016) event possible.
Mid-Century Modern Theme:
Your design inspiration should be mid-century modern architecture and design. Inspiration can be local or international. Designs may be closely linked to a specific designer, architect, or artist or may be loosely based on design components and ideas of mid-century modern form. Winning designs will be judged on general aesthetics, functionality, constructability, materials and how they generally embody the design ideals of mid-century modern design.
The contest is open to teams (or individuals) from any country aged 18 and over, as allowed by law but selected teams are subject to the rules and requirements outlined below. To enter, you must register your team prior to the due date listed below. Only teams with complete registrations will be considered. Void where prohibited. Volunteers, judges, and paid employees directly involved with the competition are prohibited from entering the contest.
Registration opens May 18, 2016. Teams may submit their applications in advance of submitting their designs.
Design entries must be received by 5:00 p.m. C.S.T. on July 8, 2016.
Selected entries will be announced on August 1, 2016.
Selected designs will be constructed by the winning teams and should be delivered to Dean Avenue (adjacent to Jens Jensen Park), in the parking spaces, in downtown Ravinia, Highland Park, Illinois by 9am on October 9, 2016.
Constructed designs will be exhibited and auctioned off for charity on the afternoon of October 9, 2016.
Auctioned structures must be removed from the site by 10 pm October 9, 2016 and delivered to the winning bidder’s site if within 30 miles of the auction site in Ravinia, Highland Park, IL. If winning bidder resides farther than 30 miles of the Auction Site, delivery coordination or shipping arrangements are the sole responsibility of the winning bidder. Purchased designs may be stored for one (1) week at Full Circle Architects (737 St. Johns Ave., Highland Park, IL) pending pickup or delivery arrangements by the winning bidder.
How to Enter:
Visit the “Contest Entry” page at to register your team and get further details on the Design Challenge. An entry fee of $25 shall be required for each entry. The entry fee shall be paid to the Ravinia Neighbors Association and shall be used to support historic tourism in Ravinia. After registering your team, you will receive an email confirmation. After completion of your design concept, you will reply to this email to submit your design and any associated materials by the above deadline.
Entry Submittal Requirements:
Digital copies of drawing plans, elevations, and a color rendering are required. Please limit submissions to ten pages. Make sure to include images to effectively convey your design. When you submit your entry, please provide a brief description about the playhouse or doghouse design and how it fits the theme. We encourage you to think about what “Mid-Century Modern” means to you or to the user and how those ideas are integrated into the design. Entries without a relevant description will be disqualified. We encourage entrants to be as imaginative and creative as possible, but please keep in mind that the design must be buildable and easily transportable by your team. Providing construction drawings for your design will be beneficial for review by the judges. All entries should be sent via email to info@HistoricRavinia.com. For files which exceed 20 mb, please upload your entry to Dropbox, Box, Google Drive or other digital file sharing resource and send the link via email. Limit one (1) entry per person/group. Please be sure to indicate which structure your design represents.
Submissions are subject to the General Terms outlined below. These General Terms grant Organizers non-exclusive rights to use the images you submit (you retain ownership of and copyrights of the images). Please review the Terms below; do not enter if you do not agree to these terms.
Design Size & Materials:
Entrants will not be required to provide measurements in their designs, but the final winning constructed designs must be built within 5’-0” Height X 5’-0” Width X 5’-0” Length. These measurements allow your structure to be easily transported by your team and the end user. For transportation purposes, please also consider the weight and construction design of your structure while maintaining quality construction and appearance. We need to be able to lift these structures using physical manpower. Judges may pay particular attention to use of environmentally friendly and recycled materials.
The playhouse or doghouse you design must be safe and appropriate for children and animals. It must be buildable by your team (or a contractor you partner with) by the deadlines above and within a budget your team can afford, if selected by the Judges. Your design may be created by yourself or as part of a group. However, only one member of a group may submit the design created by the group.
If your design is selected by the Judges, you should be able to construct the entry or be partnered with a contractor who is able to construct the design. The design needs to be able to fit on the back of a trailer and should be within the measurements described above. Again, the completed structure should be safe and solid for use by children or pets. Materials should be representative of mid-century modern design but should be safe and be able to resist weather since the structures will remain outdoors. Extra consideration will be given to designs with sustainable elements, reused materials or other environmentally friendly ideas. All necessary funding and sourcing of materials is the responsibility of the selected team.
The winning designs will be selected by the competition Judges comprising of Highland Park Historic Preservation Commission, architects, designers and preservationists. The purpose of these Judges is to review the submitted designs and select the top entries for construction by winning teams and exhibition at the Historic Ravinia event. The Judges have the right to make suggestions for any modifications to the design to fit the criteria.
Winners will be determined by the competition judges and the Highland Park Historic Preservation Commission and will be announced on August 1, 2016. Ten (10) winning designs are anticipated to move on to the next (construction) phase of the contest. The judges may select more or less entries at their discretion. The selected teams must meet the criteria after being reviewed by the competition Judges. Winning teams may be selected from any location as applicable by law.
Selected winning teams will be notified by email and are subject to verification of eligibility and compliance with these Official Rules and General Terms. If award notification is returned as undeliverable or a potential winner does not return the required documents within the time specified, the award will be forfeited and may be awarded to an alternate winner at Judges’ discretion.
A Winner, by acceptance of the prize, agrees to release, indemnify and hold harmless the “Organizers” of this competition and Historic Ravinia event; including but not limited to, the Highland Park Historic Preservation Commission, Highland Park Cultural Arts Commission, City of Highland Park, Ravinia Neighbors Association, and each of their respective employees, representatives, agents, contractors, assigns, advertisers, officers, directors, shareholders and attorneys from any and all liability, loss, damage, cost, claim or expense related to any allegation regarding the award of, the receipt of, or the use of award. Except where prohibited, by accepting award, Winners grant Organizers and those acting under their authority permission to use their name, photograph, voice and/or likeness, image, biographical information and statements, at any time or times, for advertising, trade, publicity and promotional purposes without compensation, in any and all media now known or hereafter discovered, worldwide, and on the Internet, without notice, review or approval. Winner acknowledges that Organizers have neither made, nor are in any manner responsible or liable for, any warranty, representation or guarantee, express or implied, in fact or in law, relative to any award, or regarding the use, value or enjoyment of any award, including, without limitation, its quality, mechanical condition or fitness for a particular purpose. Organizers are not responsible for technical, hardware, software or telephone failures of any kind, lost or unavailable network connections, fraud, incomplete, garbled or delayed computer transmissions, whether caused by Organizers, users or by any technical or human error which may occur in the processing of submissions which may damage a user's system or limit a user's ability to participate in this Contest. Organizers reserves the right, in their sole discretion, to cancel or suspend this Contest should a virus, bug, computer problem, unauthorized human intervention or other cause beyond Organizers’ control inhibit or corrupt the administration, security, fairness or proper play of the Contest, and Organizers may disqualify any person who engages in or attempts any such activity. All issues and questions concerning the construction, validity, interpretation and enforceability of these Official Rules, or the rights and obligations of entrants and Organizers in connection with the Promotion, shall be governed by, and construed in accordance with, the laws of Illinois, without giving effect to the conflict of laws rules thereof. Entrants consent to jurisdiction and venue in, and agree that any claims or disputes shall be resolved exclusively in, the federal and state courts located in Lake County, Illinois.
